The Jones' News

Catherine has joined the Brownies and on her first outing with them enjoyed taking her mother on a early morning (well the crack of 10.30am) 'Crocus Walk' around Pennington Flash in Leigh last Sunday. She has learnt her Brownie Promise and song and has been getting her uniform together over the last few days. Her mum has bought most of it, and is currently bidding for a jacket on e-bay.

Robert had a Parent's Evening last week and got a good report - he is now waiting for a decent Gamecube game to be released so that he can spend his reward money on it. He has also paid in the last installment towards his sports trip to La Manga in Spain in which he will be taking part in May this year. Thanks to Grandad Gren for partially supporting the cause!

Sarah's school has just finished being 'Ofsteded' again and she is (very slowly) returning to normality in spite of not actually being observed by the inspectors this time. As I write she is having another 'Eric Morcambe-style' piano lesson where she plays all the right notes, but necessarily in the right order.

Martyn has gone even more blogging mad than ever. He's set up a blog for Robert's football team Hindsford GP and over 60 blogs for his brainchild called WHS SchoolDays. This is a way of celebrating the experiences and achievements of the work done by pupils in his school.

Tonight, Mum, Dad and brother Robert were treated to an evening of music, drama and dance by pupils from some Wigan primary schools. Catherine played the White Witch in a piece based on the 'Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Dad particularly liked the bit where the White Witch turned all the mythical creatures to stone. Garrett Hall primary school produced the best performance of the evening.

The evening was finished off by a group of street musicians who called themselves 'Urban Strawberry Lunch'. They make most of their instruments from unusual and often discarded items, such as drainpipes, car wheels and plastic water tanks. Although they went on far too long and excessively loud at times, they were actually very good.

Sarah liked the bat-phones the best - large drainpipes of different lengths which were hit on their ends with bats (similar to the ones in the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester). The music was very techno-dance in style, although the finale was the theme used for cricket programmes on TV.

All in all, quite an enjoyable evening.

  • It's to do with times zones - I had set the clock to WET Western European Time to take account of the Daylight Saving function (+ or - an hour) but left the blog time set to GMT which does not lose or gain hours according to the season.

It's only come to light since last weekend when the clocks went back and I've corrected it now.

Have you looked at the WHS SchoolDays Project yet? http://whsschooldays.blogspot.com. Let me know what you think!

  • Cheers Bob, that's the sort of feedback I need. The colour thing's come up several times and so I'm thinking of changing it - the kids want it to be more colourful (and have games on it). It was supposed to be a minimalistic cool design, but not everyone sees it that way!

You do need to be running the latest version of Media Player to see the videos - you can get it free from Microsoft. It should run on Windows 98 though.

All I can think of for the comments problem is that you need to refresh your screen to update the display. Sometimes a previous version of a webpage can be stored on your computer until it is refreshed. Occasionally Blogger is slow to update the new post and comment information, due to the volume of traffic on its servers.

    Thanks again

  • Well nothing's changed since your last visit!

  • Hi Bob

I think your system's certainly got the gremlins! The stories about Sue, Clair and the Birthdays have been there quite a while - posts appear almost instantly after they've been published. Elaine's post was not on the top very long before it was superceded.

The longest I have had to wait for a page to be updated is about 10 minutes and that's quite rare. The dates are all correct too. Your posting is now on top and showing the correct date. I'll copy this e-mail into the comments and you can check if it's there.

No-one else has reported any such problems. It must be a problem with your ISP or machine - perhaps it's a good excuse for another upgrade!

    Hope this helps

    Martyn
