The Houltons' Messenger Service

The Houltons Messenger is a place where you can chat live just with family members. It is very similar to MSN Messenger and has coloured text, smileys, and sounds to send with your chat.

It does need the latest version of Java to be installed on your computer (if you haven't got it already), but that's easy to do and I've put the instructions in the comment section of this message.

To start chatting, enter a User Name in the window below and then click the 'Connect' button. Wait until the message 'You have joined room: The_Houltons - Welcome to our live chat room!' appears. Then type your messages into the bottom line and click the 'Send' button on the right.

To make the chat room bigger or fill the screen, click the 'Float or Unfloat' button with four arrows on it, which is on the icon bar just above the chat line.

If you have a broadband connection, this will allow the kids to chat to each other safely (no-one else is likely to be in The Houltons Messenger chat room except us) and for free.

Oh, I've also made a permanent link to the Houlton's Messenger Service on the right hand side, so when this message eventually disappears, it will always be available there.

Happy Chatting

Martyn

  • Yeah, it does need the latest version of Java to work - but it's easy to install and doesn't need rebooting.

    Just go here:

    http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_ie.jsp

and click 'Begin Download' to download 'Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6'

I've just done it now and everything is fine - no problems
